Prof. Piantini is an Associate Professor and Head of the Lightning and High Voltage Research Center at the University of São Paulo, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1997. An IEEE Senior Member, he convenes CIGRE WG C4.67 (previously C4.408) and has co-authored 5 CIGRE Technical Brochures. He serves as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility and holds editorial roles with Electric Power Systems Research and High Voltage. He has chaired the International Symposium on Lightning Protection (SIPDA) since 1997 and sits on the scientific committees of the ICLP and ICHVE conferences. His work has earned the IEEE EMC Society Technical Achievement Award (2022) and the ICLP R.H. Golde Award (2018). An IEEE EMC Society Distinguished Lecturer (2021–2022), he has delivered keynotes worldwide and given over 190 media interviews to promote lightning safety. He is the editor of two IET books and author or co-author of over 230 peer-reviewed papers and 10 book chapters, consolidating his status as a leading authority on lightning interaction with power systems.
